WHAT IS A DISC HERNIATION?

A herniated disk indicates a complication with the rubbery cushions, or disks, that rest between the vertebrae that make your spine. Spinal disks have soft, jelly-like centers called a nucleus. The nucleus is encased in a tougher, rubbery exterior called an annulus. A herniated disk, which is sometimes referred to as a slipped disk or ruptured disk, occur when parts of the nucleus pushes out through a tear in the annulus.

Most often, herniated disks are caused by the age-related tears known as disk degeneration. As we age, our disks become less flexible and are prone to tearing or rupturing, even from a minor strain. The following factors can increase your risk of a herniated disk:

  • Weight. Excess body weight causes extra stress on the disks in your lower back.
  • Occupation. People with physically demanding jobs have a greater risk of back problems. Repetitive lifting, pulling, pushing, bending sideways and twisting also can increase your risk of a herniated disk.
  • Genetics. Some people inherit a predisposition to developing a herniated disk.
  • Smoking. It’s thought that smoking reduces the oxygen supply to the disk, causing it to break down more quickly.

While herniated disks can occur in any area of the spine, they appear to be more common in the lower back, or lumbar spine. It can also occur in the neck, or cervical spine.
